Everyone has a different way they like wax on a board but here's how I wax a new board and then how i maintain a good grip on the wax here in cold water sweden,,,
When you buy a board you get warm water wax and take a small old plastic or tupperware container and fill it up with water so that you can take the wax block and dip it into the water (over half way up the wax block without wetting your your finger tips)..take the water and stick it in the microwave oven till it gets almost boiling hot..dip the wax into the water till it begins to melt then start to rub it onto your board in a gentle circular motion...this procedure will give your board the 'perfect' little bumps that surfers like to have on their boards..(yepp now you have the secret!!).If you have a normal length shortboard about half to 3/4 of the block should disappear before you are finished..
I never wax my boards here with winter (cold water) wax..i reckon it's too soft and just gets all over everything especially when it's warmer than water temps, eg in my car at home etc..I alwayts have warm water wax but I make sure that my board is wax combed in a warm environment BEFORE i get out into the cold and surf and when you put a well wax combed warm water waxed surfboard into cold water the wax becomes rock hard..like really rough sandpaper and stays like that all surf..i then scratch up my board before every surf and really don't need to wax it up very often at all wtih new wax..
hope that is of some help to you..DA RAT;)
