knutigro....I wasn't there that day...I was surfing a different spot. I only cut off the guy once (he got the point)...normally if I cut someone off I raise my hand towards the guy letting him know I am sorry....its on the rarest of occation that I am in the way of someone on purpose....unless they are from Denmark/Germany and charge each wave like they own it

But like you said I usually tell the person if they at all seem approachable.....
As far as your question, I don't have the correct answer but I can tell you what has worked for me. I respect the locals but you have to surf that spot plenty of times to determine who is and who isn't....the fact of the matter is some surfers are nice and some are not, some are willing to share the ocean and some think that it is theirs - you are there to surf not watch others while they do. So, you have to be alitte ego but at the same time allow others to join in as well. In Sweden, I find that most are willing to share...in the States if you go for it and keep missing you might find yourself at the back of the line too long...
I ALWAYS check the inside to see if someone is charging, I go for it as well and if he/she makes it I bail out (right of way).....if I am the inside guy and someone is in my path I yell inside!! A lot of times (doesn't happen to me in Sweden but in Cali it does) 4-5 guys charge the same wave....then its good to know left from right to avoid collision

It's easier to punch the brakes on a shortboard, when I am on a longboard I yell "I can't steer on this thing" it scares the shit out of the guy in your way and gets their attention
Hopefully I answered your question
